How To Entertain A Child While Working From A Home Office

There is no doubt that the benefits of being a work-at-home parent outweigh the drawbacks. However, some days can prove to be difficult when your two year-old is determined to climb on top of your filing cabinet while you’re trying to participate in an important conference call.

Here are ten tips that can help make your life easier, and your little ones happier, while you work at home.

Set up a little desk for your tiny assistant in your home office, close enough for you to keep an eye on him, but far enough away for you to focus on your work.

Tell your child that he is your personal assistant-in-training and emphasize what a big deal it is for him to have this title and his own work area.

Provide your child with some tools similar to those on your desk. Carefully select only the safest items that are virtually indestructible. Your child’s active imagination and natural curiosity can easily lead to disaster if he gets his hands on the wrong gadget.

Assign your new assistant with important job responsibilities. Young children love to imitate adults, especially their parents. Depending upon what type of business you operate from home, you can dream up duties that mirror what your child watches you do every day.

One duty that may delight your toddler is opening mail. Give the child junk mail, advertisements or anything else you don’t want to read. Provide a little trashcan or place for him to pitch the envelope if that’s what you usually do.

Another job that may thrill your child and can potentially occupy him for more than an hour is organizing your out-dated files, old business cards, duplicate copies, rough drafts and any other impertinent papers. The key to this little task is to place files to be organized in a basket or file bin and provide an empty desk drawer or old briefcase for your toddler to transfer the papers to and from – possibly repeatedly. If you can manage to concentrate on your work and coach your new assistant at the same time, you may stimulate their thinking by beginning to count the papers he or she is moving from the basket into the desk drawer.

A must-have for your new little employee is a notepad or notebook similar to the type you use for taking notes, and crayons (if he or she will accept such a “childish” writing implement.) Encourage your child to draw a picture for you and make sure you praise the final product. The more compliments he or she hears from you, the more your child will want to keep creating special drawings for you, or Grandma and Aunt Jeannie and Uncle Timmy etc. Either take a brief time out or make it a routine at the end of the day to hang your child’s masterpieces in your office. He will feel like he accomplished something that made you proud. Let your child help you tape his work on the side of your desk or up on the wall. You may be surprised by how intrigued your toddler is with tape!

A chalkboard is an easy, inexpensive addition to your home office that you may never need, but your assistant-in-training will probably use it every day. If you buy the big sidewalk chalk, your toddler will be less likely to decide to taste the bright colored sticks. If he or she does try to take a bite, the chances of choking are reduced with these fat pieces of chalk. Make a production out of adding this new item to your office. Pretend you need it to use it to record your daily business reminders. Your child will be more eager to get his little hands on something he sees you using. One little warning: Although this cheap addition to your office may offer a new outlet for your child’s creativity, it will usually lead to the need for a quick bath at the close of the business day!

There are a few items that are actually “toys,” but may be able to pass for “tools” (similar to the machines you use every day) to be added to your new assistant’s desktop. Various toy companies manufacture mini-versions of adult products, like little battery operated computers, designed to teach your child the alphabet or animal sounds; play telephones that ring by themselves and talk back to your child; and musical keyboards that perform tunes automatically and also allow your toddler to make his own melodies. Your toddler may be content to imitate you with toys, like these, that look similar or sound the same as your desktop devices.

Depending upon the location of your office, layout of your house, and your child’s level of independence, you may be able to designate duties that require him to leave your office to go find a phone book for you, or to locate that big envelope that came in the mail the other day. You can purposely forget to collect all the items you will need to complete your job that day or you can ask your little assistant to seek out objects that you don’t really have to have immediately. Toddlers usually like to look for things, especially when they think they are helping mommy or daddy. Be sure to thank your child and compliment him for being able to find exactly what you wanted!

Kids & Divorce – What to Consider When Deciding Your Family’s Time – Sharing & Parenting Plan

In Florida we no longer use terms like “custody,” “visitation,” and “primary residential parent” which suggest that a child is a possession to be argued over. These terms mislead parents into thinking that ultimately one of them can win and the other can lose their children.

It is critical that divorcing parents understand that only their marriage is ending. In fact, their familial bond will remain long after the legal divorce is done. As the old adage goes blood is thicker then water. And, children have a special way of keeping people connected.

Every child needs and deserves two parents. So, divorcing parents should avoid the win/lose illusion and instead focus on how they will share time with their children and what each parent will be responsible for.

Here are ten things to consider before you decide on your family’s time-sharing and parenting plan.

1. Your family is unique. And, your family is undergoing restructuring. Be open to a variety of possibilities. Allow yourself to look at the big picture and focus on the needs of your children.

2. The time to work on feelings of betrayal and abandonment is not while you are making decisions related to time sharing with your children. Put these issues to the side and deal with them later.

3. Consider which parent is best able to undertake, manage and complete day-to-day parenting responsibilities such as shopping, homework, sick trips to the doctor, routine check-ups, playtime visits with friends, chauffeuring, daily hygiene and discipline. However, just as important as a parent’s ability to perform parenting responsibilities is his/her commitment to (a) encouraging the child’s relationship with the other parent, (b) conferring with the other parent and (c) keeping the other parent informed on all child related issues such as report cards, illnesses, and extra-curricular activities.

4. Consider your children’s connections to their communities and extended family members. Do all you can to keep these relationships consistent.

5. Your child’s primary residence and time-sharing arrangements are not permanent. As your children mature the arrangements you make should change to fit their lifestyles, needs and desires.

6. Consider the distance between your homes and the children’s school(s). How will this effect the morning and afternoon commutes, participation in school activities, playing with school friends after-school?

7. How can you best set your schedules in order to maintain consistency in your children’s bedtime, homework, bath, meals, activities etc. during school time.?

8. In an ideal world each parent would have some play time, some work time (carpooling, homework, etc.) and some alone time with each of their children.

9. Children should be expected to follow the rules of the household that they are in. Be consistent in your own house, with your own rules. If the other parent has different rules that is OK.

10. Babies and younger children may be best served by shorter times with each parent.

Homeschool parents and students must be looking at the problems traditional schools are facing with no small degree of wonderment. As homeschool families require minimal change in their routine, classroom teachers are scrambling to find the balance between in-person and online learning.

Of course some change is inevitable, even for homeschoolers. Soccer matches are on hold, parks and hiking trails closed, even the workout gym isn’t available.

While those closings are disappointing and disturbing, homeschoolers know how to create, to innovate and how to survive mentally and emotionally.

Even if the weekly group meeting is electronic, homeschoolers confidently connect online with other students and parents who understand the dynamic nature of learning and life.

Homeschoolers get it!

They know life changes daily, yet they continue to grow as individuals and community. Every day is an adjustment to change, some changes subtle, others profound. Families who homeschool are not totally controlled by autocratic decision makers or government decrees.

The homeschool system of learning is founded on solid learning principles, one of which is that you confidently adjust as needed to a changing environment. There is no waiting for extended committee meetings or infinitely delayed administrative dictum. Your mind matters most and enables you to make the proper decisions in this rapidly changing cultural environment.

In fact, the present pandemic can become an effective teaching tool, integrating something real in our lives with traditional “school stuff.” This integration, while not in the books, can create lifelong learning while increasing our analytic ability, knowledge base and creativity skills.

5. Politics: Does the pandemic being continued favor one political party over another?

6. Literature: Is this a sequel to 1984 or Brave New World?

7. Debate: Government Control versus Individual Independence.

8. Physical Education: Build a workout place using household items.

9. Economics: Why are some business essential, others not?

10. Art: Depict peaceful protests and violent riots in watercolor.

11. Music: Compose mood music or words showing internal emotions of the elderly currently living in nursing homes.

12. Psychology: Dig deep. What’s going on in your mind?

13. Technology: What would this be like if we didn’t have our smart devices?

Those suggestions listed above are only kick-starters for our minds. Each of those sections can have multiple related assignments. Start with a blank paper and do a mind-map of where you can go with each of these.

Always look at the bigger picture.

Face the truth. We are in a pandemic and it is not fun. It isn’t fun, but we can learn from it. We must not become victims of media manipulations. It is critical we keep our minds alert and active. By looking seriously at the relationship between the pandemic and real learning we may find relationships of a greater nature than first appears.

Our nation was founded on solid principles based on genuine truths. Our independent minds must continue to be focused on those truths. We need to continue that tradition. We cannot allow anarchy and riots to change the nature of our country.

Facial care is a delicate subject for some men. A rugged manly look may be a great thing in a young man but male skin care becomes more and more important as he ages.
