Local Small Business Advertising Ideas – Where to Get Them

Local small business owners spend a great deal of money on advertising. Most of us never know if the advertising is paying off. Most never know if their advertising or marketing is any good at all. The problem is, we ask the wrong people their opinion. We ask our co-workers if an advertisement looks good. The CEO asks the treasurer what she thinks. The problem is that most of us are not experts in advertising. At most, we know what we like in graphic design.

So, where do we get great advertising ideas? Most of us never look outside our doors for advertising or marketing ideas. The smarter small business owners look outside their doors to other, more successful, business owners…in the same business. That a smart way to look for ideas. Copy what works. It’s the franchise method. Test an idea, copy it, and deploy it to the vendors.

Te problem with his idea is that everyone in your business has access to these ideas. They aren’t new. Soon you are copying the copier. You are playing “follow the follower”. My mentor Dan Kennedy calls this “Marketing Incest”.

Most tested and proven small business advertising and marketing ideas are found completely outside of your core business. These ideas can then be tested and translated into any business you like. For example, I own a retail store and sell vacuum cleaners. But of the 42 separate marketing and advertising methods I employ, only one idea came from the retail industry. One out of forty two. In fact, the most profitable ideas I use come from the restaurant, medical, and insurance fields.

The idea is simple. Find businesses that are actually owned by someone. Not major corporation, but businesses that have a leader calling the shots. Most successful companies have articles written about them and their CEO. In fact, there are hundreds of books out there on Amazon.com that hold all the marketing and advertising secrets these leaders used to grow their company. These ideas are plentiful, easy to find, and books are cheap.

You can read a book about an entrepreneur, and I see what made them successful. Then you just have to imagine how that idea, at least the core of it, could be applied to your business. Most great advertising and marketing ideas are similar or even identical across all industries. A few tweeks is all it usually takers to generate a profitable new idea for your business.

You can go to the library and take a day doing this; Look up magazines where there are direct mail ads running. Direct mail meaning that you can actually buy something from the ad, or at least request information. These are not brand building ads. Now find the same magazine from a year ago. Look at the ads. Which ads are the same from a year ago? Those ads are profitable. These are the ads to study. What do they have in common? A few hours of studying these ads will show you a pattern that great ads use. Now look at the ads that are there a year ago, but are not there now. What do they have in common? These are unsuccessful ads. What are the differences between a dozen of these unsuccessful ads, and the ones that are repeated for at least a year?

Now imagine that these successful repeated ads were used to sell your product (or at least get a request for information). A few simple changes are all that’s needed for most ads.

I know this is boring work. I know it isn’t exciting, and won’t make for a great story when you tell your friends about it. But if you want to know the most profitable way to get advertising and marketing ideas for your local small business or retail store, this is it.

Business Ideas – 5 Business Ideas With Huge Potential

Are you seriously considering building your own business but simply don’t know how? Then, these business ideas will surely help you out:

1. If you don’t want to have a boss and if you want to have direct control over your working hours and income, I recommend that you start up an internet home based business. You can create and sell ebooks (don’t worry as this is relatively easy), you can offer coaching programs on things that you are an expert on, you can make money from blogging and affiliate marketing, and you can buy and sell items on eBay and other auction sites.

2. Set up your own gym. There has never been a time where people are more conscious with the way they look and how much they weigh. With so many desperate people trying to lose weight, setting up your own gym can be the most profitable way for you to make money. Of course, you will need to learn how to run such business in order to increase your chances to succeed. You can attend relevant classes and seminars to get in-depth knowledge about this type of business.

3. Gadget store. More and more people are now obsessed (yes, obsess is the word) with different types of gadgets like iPods, mobile phones, laptops, etc. Take advantage of this huge demand by setting up a gadget store preferably at a local mall (you can also create your online store). As there are now so many people who are doing this business, make sure that you get ahead of the pack by offering only high quality products at reasonable prices. Of course it would help if you launch aggressive marketing campaign and if you offer 100% satisfaction to all your customers.

4. Sushi restaurant. If you haven’t noticed it yet, Japanese food is taking America, United Kingdom, and other first world countries by storm. Well, it must have something to do with people in these countries who are trying not to put too much weight. For these people, you can build up your own sushi restaurant. The key here is finding a strategic location where your target market can easily and conveniently find you.

5. Massage parlor and spa. People who work hard (and those who have great buying powers) usually spend enormous amount of money for their relaxation. Put up a massage parlor or spa that these people will go crazy about.

Business Ideas Make Good Business

Ideas are the genesis of all things, seen and unseen. In the same way, business ideas are the genesis of all things business, service and product.

All things in this universe began with an idea. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that did not spawn from an idea. Look around you and take note of what you see. If you are in an office, you might see a desk, a computer, a bookshelf, wood flooring, a lamp, some wall texture, a fan…

You may be on your back porch. You might see a fence, a pool, some trees, some shrubs, a pond, a street…

Think of all that you feel. The air, the heat, the cool, the gravitational pull, the soft fur of a cat…

All things were made or created from the source of an idea. For the idea had to be there for the action of making to begin. Just as a burn follows heat or a fall results from gravitation, the existence of all actions or products come forth from ideas.

All are there because of an idea in the mind of someone, somewhere, thought. God “thought” of the created universe before He made it. Humankind “thinks” of products before they make them. Think of anything in all of human experience that has reality and you will discover that the existence thereof resulted from a thought.

The dictionary defines an idea as a thought or aim or purpose, a belief or function of reason… leading to a possible course of action. Note that action is a part of idea. The two abide together.

No idea has meaning outside of action. In other words, to merely think of an idea cannot be qualified unless there is action to follow. In business, this concept finds perfect illustration.

Business ideas lead to business realities. Business ideas are the spring board from which business energy, business inertia, business action and business success come forth.

We find that people who ask questions, who seek the “why” in all things, life and business, become the innovators and the movers and shakers of the world.

Because they think.

For any existing business to succeed and to grow, the individuals behind it must think of business ideas as a way of life. For any new business to find a place in the world, the individuals behind it must think of business ideas as a way of life. Simply copying status quo will never do it. Or at least not do it well. For to succeed, to be cutting edge and effective and powerful, all innovators must think. And they must think with intent, with purpose, with creativity.

This concept may sound a little esoteric, a little abstract, but I assure you it is not. This concept is very, very basic, for without it little can be done. The strategy for building anything of value (yes and it surely applies to business in general) rests upon the ability of the entrepreneur to think and act upon business ideas in a meaningful way.

As a business entrepreneur, to succeed you must go the beginning to discover what this “business” thing is all about, and you will always find it begins with business ideas, produced from the mind of innovative people on a path to create and build something of value. And that’s what good business is all about.

Some Ideas for Local Small Business Advertising

Local small business advertising, although local and meant for a small business, is still advertising at its very best which on proper implementation can reap rich rewards but if neglected could push the fledgling concern into the deep schism of oblivion. According to the principles of business management, a small business must invest only 5% of its total resources in local advertising and this would reap a rich harvest only when judiciously allocated and channeled as per the advertising fundamentals.

Even now in the contemporary age of technological advancement, the best recommendation for local small business advertising is by word of mouth. However, it is a method which wins publicity at a snail’s pace and hence an entrepreneur who is desirous of fast results feels compelled to use other methods to make his firm and product well known.

One of the most popular mediums for local companies to publicize themselves is by listing themselves in the Yellow Pages. Visibility is the prime factor here and a prominently displayed ad is likely to draw not only inquiries but potential customers as well. Apart from Yellow Pages, advertising in the newspaper and local magazine also helps since these are directly delivered to the target audience and segments of population existing in the area.

An attractive business card could well serve as the vehicle for local small business advertising as it simply needs to be handed over to the prospective client. Another way of effectively distributing business cards would be include these as a part of the direct mail which is sent within the geographical area surrounding the business and is much more personal in tone as compared to telemarketing or emails.

May be acquiring a slot during one of the popular national events on television for airing one’s advertisement might be difficult or even impossible but the same is well within reach if aimed at the Cable television. Cable TV is meant for the local city dwellers and an ad flashed in it would not only pique people’s curiosity but would attract a lot of local interest as well.

Having a vehicle with one’s company logo splashed across the sides is a method of local small business advertising which deserves more than just a thought. A colorful display or a magnetic quad sitting on the roof of one’s vehicle is a perfect way to catch the eye of the passers by and in case affordability is an issue then investing in a simple magnetic sign would also achieve the desired result.

In towns and cities, people depend on buses for transportation due to which a prominent hoarding at the bus stop or sponsoring benches bearing the company’s logo for people to sit on is a good method of creating awareness. This would undoubtedly attract a mass audience but is dependent on permission being granted by the local transit authority.

Trade shows, big and small, form an integral part of city life and participation in them is likely to earn one popularity as well as revenue. However, this opportunity needs to be capitalized upon in a proper manner in order to translate into profits and aiming for trade fairs which focus on particular industries is economical as well as result oriented for a small local business.

Special Gift Ideas for Men

Most people love to receive a gift for a variety of purposes. This can include birthdays, anniversaries, or other important events. Both men and women enjoy receiving gifts. But here are gift ideas for men along with some further suggestions for consideration.

There are a wide variety of gift ideas to consider for men. The type of gift you send them can be dependent on how well you know that person and what his interests include.

However there are some general guidelines you may want to consider in order to find something the man will really appreciate.

First of all many men enjoy sports related items. For example if the person enjoys golf, then consider getting him something related to this hobby. Depending upon your available budget you want to consider a golf club or something else related to the sport like balls or other accessories.

If you aren’t sure specifically what type of sports related item to purchase then a gift certificate from a sports related retailer might be a good choice. Many men would very much appreciate the effort and expense in doing so.

Personalised sports related gifts can also be a great choice. However be certain that you know what interests the man has first. For example if he has a favorite sports team then something related to this could be a great gift idea. However don’t get him something from a team he greatly dislikes or the positive aspects of sending him a gift would be diminished.

Another type of gift to consider might be something related to cars. If the person you want to send out a gift to owns and really enjoys a particular type of car, then a nice gift might be an accessory related to this. It could be as simple as a keyring with the logo of the car he drives. Or perhaps something more involved or expensive such as body trim, etc.

It shows the person how much you care about him and how you have the taken the time and effort to find something important to him. Many men also enjoy working with their hands so perhaps something related to home improvement might be appropriate.

And other great gift ideas include personalized items such as desk accessories. You can get him a nice pen holder or paperweight engraved with his name or message. This is something he can use every day. In the process he can be reminded of your gift and further reinforce the positive nature of your gesture.

You need to learn what it takes to start from scratch and succeed. Weigh all the pros and cons before making any decision.

You are the person most capable of planning, building, and running your business.

* What kind of business do you wish to start?

* Who will buy these services and products from you?

* How do you plan to finance this project? Do you know where financing can be found?

* How will people learn about your service and products?

* Where will your business be located?

* Seeking ways to shorten the learning curve, with assistance from a mentor, a partner, or skilled employees.

* Online or local courses can also be of great benefit.

Future and Exit: In order to promise long-term success, you need to have a vision of how to expand your business into the future. Above all, you need an exit plan. Nothing continues forever, and you need to prepare to take leave of your business in a structure, controlled manner when the times comes.

Conclusion

Owning a business can be very satisfying and is certainly the biggest learning experience of your life. Careful planning, an understanding of the type of business you’ve chosen, as well as the target market it is supposed to serve, will increase your chances of long-term success.

Dig Deep for Small Business Ideas

If you’re serious about wanting to start a business, the first thing you want to do is take the time to understand what really makes you tick. Where do you get your drive? What gets you in a “zone?”

However, there’s a lot more to figuring out the BEST business idea that will make you more money and give you more freedom to enjoy more success in your life.

And success to you may be different than success to someone else. It may not be all about money at all. It may not be about finding something you are completely passionate about. It may not be about having a “cool” business — the latest fad or a unique niche.

Success is how you define it.

Finding the right idea to bring you that success takes a willingness to be patient, good timing, and a lot of research.

And there’s nothing wrong with taking your time, being careful trying to figure out which small business ideas are best.

If you rush this process, you’re bound to come up with a business that doesn’t excite you at all.

You’ll be bored.

You won’t reach goals and it will become more like a job … maybe even harder!

You’ll feel like you would working for someone else. (You don’t want that again, do you?)

First, Figure Out What You Really Want

Starting off, you really have to force yourself to relax. I know what it’s like being very, very unhappy at a job. And I can tell you from first-hand experience that walking away from a well-paying job and jumping into your own business is stressful.

But if you carefully plan your “escape,” it will make it that much better!

Set Your Short-Term Goals

Maybe you want to make a ton of money and drive around in a BMW.

Or maybe you just want the freedom to enjoy your family or friends. Or perhaps it’s just a matter of being in control of your life — being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

Whatever your long-term goals are, first you have to concentrate on the shorter term goals before you can begin to see that “big picture.”

It’s up to you.

But understand that the type of business you start will play a roll in whether or not you meet your goals — both short and long-term.

If you’re trying to startup a part-time venture while working full-time for someone else, you’re going to have to set daily goals to try and squeeze in a few hours of work every day, often before and after work! (I used to get up at 4:30 in the morning, go to my full-time job at 8:30, come home at 5 or 6 and get right back to work on my new business … and I loved it!)

But if it’s a small business idea you came up with on the ride home and it doesn’t really “drive” you, it’ll make reaching your short term goals — often the hard part — a heck of a lot more difficult.

What are Your Long-Term Plans?

That big picture includes, more than anything, something you can see yourself doing every day. Something that — even on weekends — you love to do.

And even though it is something you love to do, make sure it will feed your long-term plan. And you won’t know that until you know what your long term plan actually is!

For instance, if your plan is indeed to make a lot of money and retire at a young age, you’ll obviously have to look at small business ideas that are highly profitable.

This would include mostly business-to-business models. There is typically more profit selling to businesses (a product or service) unless you make it big in the consumer market.

Why would the business-to-business market be more profitable? Because a business would be more willing to invest in a product or service (that may even be a write-off) versus the consumer market which is more “luxury” driven. Meaning, consumers base a lot of their buying decisions on want instead of needs.

It’s also a financial issue.

A larger business can pay a $300 invoice without thinking about it whereas a consumer getting a $300 bill may sweat a little more.

This is just an example of understanding your long-term goals so you can look closer at a finite number of business ideas to get you closer to where you want to be.

And if you go ahead and hang your “open for business” sign and then realize, “Oh, I can’t make that much money doing this!”, you’ll only be taking one step forward and two steps back.

Grab a Pad … Ideas Will Come and Go

Because — like all entrepreneurs — you’re a thinker, you’ve always got ideas popping into your head. Probably more than you can handle (the brain only has so much room, right?).

That’s why you should always keep a notebook by your side.

Sure, some of the best ideas get written on a cocktail napkin. But you’re better off trying to give these ideas more permanence. And having a notebook dedicated to your small business ideas will give you a growing and buildable “diary” to use when you’re good and ready to go for it!

And once you start putting your ideas in writing, you’ll find yourself getting into the habit of using your notebook more and more. It’s like anything else that takes practice.

The more you do it, the better you get at finding the best small business ideas. And each idea will help you grow more specific or “niche” ideas.

Become a Private Investigator!

What you want to do is really learn how to research. You’ve got to dig — and dig deep — to determine what business really could work best for your success.

Not only do you have to know who you are and what’s going to drive your personality the most, but you also need to think about what sells.

What type of business can be profitable?

Too many people make the mistake of looking at only one aspect of starting a small business. If you love parakeets and you’re passionate about them, it doesn’t mean you’ll be able to open up a store in your town without knowing if anyone else likes them!

As a side note, starting an internet business allows you a greater opportunity to build a business around something you’re passionate about. If it’s parakeets you love, you’ll find more people on the internet with your same passion than you would in your own backyard. For some great information about finding your passion on the internet, click here

You research should include looking at what other businesses are doing (successfully and not so successfully) in your city or town.

Look at small businesses and even what the “big guys” are doing.

Maybe you could create a smaller business with a personal touch that the “big guys” are typically missing out on (no matter how hard they try.)

Figure out more about what makes you tick …

What kind of hobbies do you have, if any?

What kind of magazines do you enjoy?

What do you like to do most in your “free” time?

What was the best job you ever held? Even if it’s one you had when you were a kid, you may find a business in something you know and love — but don’t even realize it yet!

Business Ideas Are Everywhere

Start to think about needs in your town or city. Is there something missing? Is there a need or a product or some type of service people would use that they “want?”

What is the majority age population in your city or town? Is it mostly seniors? (a huge market because they are more active and living longer than ever.) Or is your community made up of younger families?

Check out the local sections in your paper. Read the Lifestyle and Arts section. (I always find articles about local business people who have started businesses.)

Look at local and state businesses. Look at consumer trends and what people “want.”

Is there something other businesses in your area need? Don’t be afraid to go around and ask!

Think about concerns we all have in the world today.

There are so many opportunities out there, waiting for like you to step up and get started with a new business!

Don’t be afraid to ask!

This is where your friends, family and neighbors come in. Ask them to give you their number-one need. A product or service that’s “hard-to-find.” A complaint about what’s missing from their lives.

How many times have you looked for something — a product or service — and had to travel a long distance to get it?

Answering questions will give you plenty to think about and some good material for your notebook.

And if you’re interested in the business-to-business market, you could always put together a survey and mail it out to local businesses. Give them an incentive (a low-cost, high value gift) and find out what they really need to help them improve their business.

You may find that all of the local businesses in your area need someone to take care of local deliveries. Or someone to help them type or use their computer more effectively..

Just remember, starting a small business is a process and it takes time. The more planning and research you do up front, the better chance you’ll have to success and have a little bit of fun, too.

Surprising Small Home Office Ideas

It doesn’t matter if you are working from home or in an office building, your office is one of the places you will spend huge chunks of your time. It is a space you need to be as practical as possible, and you also have to like it. It is very hard to work in an office you hate. If you dislike it, maybe you have an opportunity to change it. Here are a few ideas.

Small Spaces

If you are trying to create a new study or office space at home and don’t have a designated room for it, don’t despair. You can utilize small spaces or corners of rooms that otherwise are under-utilized and gathering dust. Look around you and see what options your home offers. Very often people overlook places because they have been deemed as too small. However, you can make small spaces look bigger with a couple of simple color changes. Once you have located the spaces you want to create an office – get to work. Check what furniture you can move or rearrange so it fits the space and looks at different possibilities for office furniture.

Color Palette

Look at what kind of colors dominate your office at the moment. Perhaps it’s time to switch it up a little. Go bold. Pick your favorite color and use it as an accent color on different parts in the office. Perhaps the wall behind your desk is extremely boring. Paint it your favorite bold color to make space look not only functional but also stylish. If the wall is out of the question because you use it for shelving, a whiteboard, or something else, consider using colored accents in other things – binders, pen holders, notebooks.

Empty Corners and Light

Do you only have a corner to use? That should not hold you back from creating an office for yourself. Find a desk that fits in or makes one your own by upcycling materials. One of the most important aspects will be how comfortable you are sitting at the desk, so make sure it fits. Make sure that the light is appropriate and doesn’t strain your eyes since corners can be quite dark, especially if the window doesn’t quite provide enough daylight.

Utilize Nooks and Crannies

Perhaps you have an empty corner in your bedroom that could easily become office space? Put a desk against the window and when you get too tired from working -you can easily look outside and rest your eyes. If you have a window behind you – make sure the curtains block out enough light for you to avoid squinting, but make sure it’s not too dark either.

Make sure you your brain will look at a bedroom as a relaxation space so make sure you separate the two areas to separate work and rest. You can have modern office space and use softer tones and textures for your bedding and bedroom furniture. This way you can easily work there, but then separate the two spaces and not worry about insomnia because your brain is still in the fifth gear thinking about work.

Secret Spaces

If you don’t want to spoil the rest of the style around the house, blend different styles and textures together. Find furniture you feel good about and that fits the rest of the style in your house. A classic desk probably will not look very good against a modern interior, so find something that looks good as a whole.

If you are short on space, see what kind of shelving you can create or utilize around you. If you have space under the desk and it’s not in the way – boxes are a good way to store items. Nowadays you can also get different solutions to neatly hide everything away when you are done. For example, hang a curtain in front of your workstation so you can hide it from guests and yourself. Otherwise, it might be glaring at you from its corner.

Your home office will become the place where you spend quite a lot of time so keep it organized. If you need a little bit of mess around you while working – organize everything once you’re done. It will give you the satisfaction of a day well spent and it will not stick out from the rest of the house like a sore thumb.
